OLD NEWS

Oct 2008 Paul Jones elected as Chairman. Membership fees agreed will rise to £110 - the first rise in fees for 7 years. WG2 has been busy on several fronts and is lobbying BERR and BSI on a number of topics including nightwear, curtains and upholstered furniture. The flammability inter-lab trial commences.
April 2008 Work on new inter-lab trials is progressing. Sales of cigarettes for flammability testing have gone well and only 10 boxes remain. Some retailers are now beginning to include statement on uncertainty of measurement in their performance manuals.
Jan 2008 UKTLF members take delivery of their flammability cigarettes. Arrangements are made for overseas sales via SDL ATLAS. UKTLF met with UKAS to discuss Uncertainty of Measurement. Textiles FR joins UKTLF.
Nov 2007 UKTLF reports the untimely death of Caroline Dawson after a struggle with cancer.
Oct 2007 UKTLF completes a successful year after contributing to changes in legislation on fibre composition and in sourcing cigarettes for flammability testing. UKTLF continues to lobby Government regarding flammability legislation. Paul Jones took over as Convenor of WG3.
June 2007 UKTLF members amend UKAS schedules to take account of changes in fibre composition legislation. New batch of cigarettes for flammability testing being produced.
March 2007 UK fibre composition Regulations amended and UKTLF members submit proposals to UKAS regarding changes in accreditation. WG3 begins working on harmonisation of uncertainty of measurement and how to approach retailers to adopt a suitable position on the subject. WG2 raises ongoing problem of sourcing compliant cigarettes for testing as the existing source of supply may be limited.
Dec 2006 UKTLF provides response to DTI proposals to amend Fibre Composition Regulations to refer to test methods in EC Directive rather than BS4407. WG1 prepares comparison of test methodologies for submission to UKAS.
Sept 2006 Geoff Briggs (WYMTS) takes over as Chairman of UKTLF. UKTLF has talks with BCFA over  co-operating on lobbying DTI to amend the FFFSR. Best practice guide on testing fibre composition of lingerie is drafted. 1st batch of specially compliant cigarettes received and distributed to members.
Aug 2006 UKTLF submits proposals to DTI regarding problems with the FR polyester fabric used in the FFFSR and issues press release to the industry warning of potential problems.
July 2006 UKTLF welcomed Airbase Interiors as a new member.  There was a major discussion relating to a problem with the FR polyester test fabric specified in the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988. More details on this topic can be obtained by clicking here. Reports were given on current inter-laboratory trials, BSI Committees and UKTLF working groups.
Feb 2006 UKTLF welcomed Flametect Fabrics as new members. Reports were given on current inter-laboratory trials, BSI Committees and UKTLF working groups. The UKTLF Policy Statement on Uncertainty of Measurement was unanimously adopted by members and further discussion with UKAS was instigated.
Dec 2005 UKTLF welcomed new associate members - James H Heals, SDL ATLAS, and Tinius Olsen. Reports were given on current inter-laboratory trials, BSI Committees and UKTLF working groups were given and the recent UKAS Textile Day was discussed together with a proposal regarding uncertainty of measurement. Uncertainty will play a major part of future audits against ISO 17025 and WG3 was tasked with preparing a policy statement.
Sept 2005 (AGM) Buckfast Spinning were welcomed as a new member after their decision to become UKAS accredited following the demise of the CAA accreditation scheme. The existing Executive was unanimously re-elected for a further 12-month period. Changes to the UKTLF constitution were approved by the members to permit 'associate' membership by organisations who supply goods and/or services to UKTLF members. Members were given a presentation by Roaches on 'Opti-Rate Smoothness Analysis System'. A report was given on the inter-laboratory trials on flammability and their relevance to TCI/63 work. Members were advised that UKAS have organised a 'Textile Day' on uncertainty of measurement in October.
June 2005 3 more inter-laboratory trials are currently being organised. Reports were given on various BSI committee activities including the proposed classification of nightwear standard, changes to the care labeling standard, and changes to the international standard for fibre composition analysis. In addition, UKTLF members will be participating in some BSI trials on flammability testing. Working Group 3 on uncertainty of measurement met immediately after the main meeting and involved an open forum discussion on the reporting of uncertainty with representatives from UKAS. WG3 now intends to escalate its work programme on the establishment of standardised uncertainty budgets for a wide range of tests.
March 2005 UKTLF welcomed new members (FIRA and John Cotton) to their first meetings. Reports were given on the latest inter-laboratory trials and the next trials decided upon. These will be pH and abrasion. Reports were presented on the various working groups and on BSI committee activities. UKTLF will meet in April with UKAS to discuss reporting of uncertainty of measurement.
Dec 2004 UKTLF meeting in Leicester. Major topics discussed include BSEN14465 and BS2543, Furniture Regulations, and Digieye. 2 correlation exercises started on tear strength and bursting strength.
Sept 2004 Val Sollis elected chairperson, Geoff Briggs elected vice-chairperson. UKTLF joins various BSI committees.
June 2004 UKTLF completes latest correlation exercise on tensile strength using 25mm grab method.
June 2003 The Executive was praised by members at the recent AGM for its efforts over the first year of UKTLF operations and unanimously re-elected for a second term. 3 working groups were providing good co-operation between the labs in the fields of fibre content, flammability and uncertainty of measurement. Liaison with ASBCI, UKAS and SDC had been established and UKTLF would be applying for membership in its own right of various BSI technical committees dealing with textile matters.
April 2003 WG2 (Flammability) and WG3 (Uncertainty of measurement) hold inaugural meetings and set out their agendas for their activity over the next year.
March 2003 UKTLF set's up its own website www.uktlf.com with fully integrated dedicated email systems.
September 2002 1st inter-laboratory correlation exercise conducted. WG1 on fibre composition starts work.
February 2002 Membership reaches 21 laboratories. Inter-laboratory trials in collaboration with ASBCI set up.
